Dream Fathers

Most of us paused recently on Father’s Day to honor our fathers, the special folks who gave us life and shaped who we are.  Good dads are the strong arms that held us when we were babies but continue to hold us together and close to their hearts when we need affirmation or protection.  They deliver fun and play, they give warm and silly nicknames.  They are our heroes, rescuers, fountains of ever-flowing wisdom to guide us, providers of support, the superglue that somehow superhumanly fixes whatever goes wrong.

In dreams, a father can represent all of these qualities—the nurturing authority that one should be in real life, both physically but also spiritually.  He can represent a pastor, a boss, a leader—someone serving such role in our life.

Many of us, however, have not experienced the blessing of having the ideal father.  Perhaps we fought to survive his anger, anxieties, abuse, or absenteeism.  We wake up from our ‘father’ dreams with pounding hearts and tears for what we’ve missed.

We may no longer have our dads with us in this life—and we ache for them terribly.

Dads have it rough sometimes—there is a lot of weight to carry for children.  Usually there are regrets for not being strong or wise enough to mend children’s hurts.  The middle-of-the-night heartache over angry words or failures to protect can sadden and overwhelm a sensitive dad.

Here is the best part about a father appearing in our dreams:  often, it is our Divine Father revealing himself in our night time slumber as he touches us in those tender, unsure places that desperately need rescuing. We may be all grown up but still need a Daddy's love.

He is one who is always close to us even though we may not be able to see him with our eyes or touch him with our fingers. He longs to bring healing and encouragement. He may have truth to speak to us regarding our FATHER issues.  His affection more than makes up for any deficit left by our earthly fathers.

Words of a song keep running through my mind as I write about the meaning of the Dream Father…

“How far is too far for you?
How hard is too hard for you?
How much is too much for you, great God.
There is nothing—no, there’s nothing--you can’t do.
There is no wilderness,
no desert place,
no sickness,
there is no sinking ship,
no history,
no weakness,
that you can’t save me from,
that you can’t save me from.”  (Rush of Fools, “There is Nothing”)

May we each encounter a fresh touch of Father who overcomes all weakness--in our dreams tonight!

Killer Comparison

Healthy competition in life is good for us all.  It forces us to stretch beyond our normal capabilities into new levels of potential.  We meet our match, enjoy victory, or experience a thrashing that may bruise the ego but inspire perseverance to overcome the next time.

Competition in inappropriate contexts, however, can destroy the joy within organizations, relationships, within oneself.

It starts in us as a feeling of insecurity.  We notice the gifting and abilities of other people and compare them to our own, fearing our shortcomings in contrast to their strengths.  We worry about rejection or playing ‘second fiddle’ or what other people might think of us.  We feel intimidated.  Jealousy grows and the competition begins.  Subtle ploys, manipulative alliances, or undercutting words rise out of us to pull the ‘competitor’ down—we find ourselves caught in a trap as we experience inability to bless and celebrate with others because of how that might affect US.

We may sense there is a huge LACK in life (starting with the void in our own hearts) and if we don’t grab everything, there won’t be enough to go around--for everyone to reach their full potential.

Our unstated agenda becomes building ourselves up to be #1.

Because of our own lack of confidence,  we too often trample on the hearts, character, and reputation of unsuspecting people that don't deserve our negativity.  We see their abilities and want what they have, but we don’t see the hidden hurts or the price they have paid to operate at their level of strength.

Jealousy kills.  It does not build teamwork, but tears it down.  And the way I see it, we are all on the same ‘team’ of humanity.

Ancient scriptures tell us, “Where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:16). We are talking about a spiritual sickness that permeates every part of our perspective and behavior.  If not recognized and renounced in our lives, eventually we turn into miserable people that make other people miserable.

Being on the receiving end of someone’s insecurity and jealousy is brutal.  It is difficult to determine the cause or any effective solutions, especially if no one is willing to address it.  But nearly everyone around can sense it.

What if we settled into contentment with our present circumstances and rejoiced with others in their successes without the nagging thought, “What about me?”  What would our relationships be like if we truly embraced others as supporters and crucial missing pieces, instead of possible threats?

May God’s peace and confidence in who you are—as you are connected to Him--resonate in your life today.  You are unique and special, in just the right place at just the right time, not lacking in any good thing.  You are a work of art in progress—just like everyone else.  We are all on the same team, each with a very cool destiny…we need to cheer each other on!

Dreams Bring Us Together

As a dream interpreter, sometimes it seems I’m living in a dream. I  hear the darnedest things at the strangest times.  People stop me in the grocery store to talk about dreams.  The other day, I was heading into a bathroom stall, pants halfway unzipped, when a lady stopped me and told me her dream, interrogating me for possible meanings.

Even though dream interpretation is an offbeat subject, it is intriguing to most people. Tell someone that you interpret dreams and get ready to listen for awhile.

Our ‘Dream Team’ (my husband, friend and I) regularly go out to artsy events with our chairs and a sign that says, “Got Dreams?  Free dream interpretation”.  Folks we’ve never met will sit and share some of their deepest puzzles and problems.  For each one, we listen to Spirit for revelation and encouragement to share.  We truly feel honored as we are invited to speak into the hearts of new friends.

Our hometown Abilene’s ArtWalk last night kept us busy for hours as we listened and did our best to interpret.  Kudos to the brave and precious people who are willing to trust a little and bare their souls to strangers—sweet treasures!
  • Mothers who fear for their children’s safety
  • People experiencing nighttime ‘bear’ attacks and need answers
  • Folks desperate for new beginnings, including the ability to sleep and receive dreams again
  • Artists traveling through portals, entering new realms of creativity
  • Husbands continually pondering troubling recurring nightmares since childhood
  • Social workers recognizing demons in clients
We listened to dreams about people falling off buildings, getting trapped in algae, handicapped cats, wedding rings on thumbs, cooking pet poodles, finding quarters in laundromats, visions of Creation, elephants made of birthday cake.  I promise I am not making any of this up!

Of course, during such a community event, constant distractions threaten to derail our tender moments, such as roaring car engines, loud music, politicians interrupting, friends shouting their ‘howdys’, Zorro on a Segway, and even Darth Vader invading our space and conversation. It can be difficult to concentrate and push past potential interference, but worth every bit of effort.

People often preface their dream by saying, “My dream is so bizarre—you’re going to think I’m a weirdo.” Probably not!  I think we’ve heard it all. Dreams are just strange sometimes—thank you for sharing them with us.

Question:  in one sentence--what is the strangest thing you have ever experienced in a dream?

Prophetic Revelation Dreams

I believe all dreams are given to prompt us to pray—the Dream Giver invites us into relationship by providing us with mysterious dream messages to puzzle over—so that we will ask for enlightenment.  There is no greater thrill for me than understanding those messages--connecting with Spirit—together on holy ground.

I believe God savors sharing his secrets with his seekers.

Often, we receive revelation so we can act or pray wisely. Always, it encourages us to know we are hearing and interpreting correctly—for instance, through prophetic revelation dreams.  We are given a picture of what is happening or going to happen--from God’s perspective.

For example, I dreamed last week that I watched a husband of a couple I know, busily at work.  He was happily rewiring their bedroom, installing new electrical outlets, increasing the power output for each one.  Because of the new location of outlets, the furniture needed to be rearranged.  In the dream, I wondered about the extent of change needed and how existing clocks and plug-ins would handle the shift in energy.

I saw the husband the other day and shared my dream with him.  I wasn't sure if he was symbolic or not.  We talked about symbol possibilities:  a bedroom could represent a place of rest or intimacy, for a marriage and possibly also in spiritual lives.  Outlets would represent the ability to tap into an increased and multiplied source of power (some 'rewiring' in thinking could be necessary).  Furniture would represent equipping or the storage of gifts and combined qualities to be used in everyday life.

Imagine my surprise—and delight—when he told me that in real life, they ARE installing new electrical outlets in their bedroom—thus, also rearranging their furniture. He shared with me that his wife has been sensing a greater ‘charge’ and intensifying strength between them!

Of course, my response is to pray for them during their transition, that nothing will get FRIED in their process. But also, to take comfort that Creator knows their details and cares to speak to me about it all--so I can be an encourager.  Sweet deal!

Using Insider Lingo

Our family knows how to have huge fun with language—ask anyone who knows us.  We are a peculiar verbal variety.  Our relaxed wordplay stems from study of language, backgrounds and creative experimentation that has given confidence spurring our quirky communication.  Relaxed Greek country hick boy business major marries proper big city girl English major— imagine our children’s handicaps to overcome.

Every family has their own set of specialized words that may stem from a toddler’s mispronunciation—perhaps words that ‘stuck’ and are too cute to let go.

Similarly, every group develops its own specific jargon.  I've  studied and worked in places where a major part of the training was learning the vocabulary—knowing the history and concepts behind words one may never have heard before.

Architects speak a different language than homemakers, bankers, webmasters, or theology students. Bring them all together for a community project, however, they must step out of ‘default language mode’ to find common ground of understanding each other.

Problems can arise when a person or group becomes egocentric in expecting ‘outsiders’ to adapt and strive to understand the ‘insider lingo’—with no dictionary to go along with it.  Communication experts call this ‘high context’—no clear explanation is given and folks must sleuth out the hidden meanings that are implied, never sure of what is precisely being said. A notorious language barrier.

Spiritual groups are famous for this breach in communication.  ‘Religious’ language often becomes the norm.  But when used on folks outside a particular belief or denomination, relationship is strained and people feel like they do not belong.

Communication of the heart gets lost.

There are times to lay aside our worldview and make efforts to enter into others’ realities.  Know thy audience. Don’t assume that others understand your insider lingo. Stretch out of your comfort zone to learn and speak THEIR ‘language’. It is the kind thing to do.

For fun, here is an example I received a while back…see if you can translate:

"But I would like to know, sister, have you been washed in the blood, dunked in the river, do you have your fire insurance?  Have you been delivered?  Have your shackles been loosed, bondages removed, have you experienced the fire?  Can you walk through your dreams, do you see the orbs, have you drunk the new wine, done any rug time lately?  Can you name it and claim it, confess it and possess it, blab it and grab it?  Are you soaking in the Word? Are you possessing the land or just longing for your new body?  You know that chilly Jordan river is waiting for us all. Tell me, sister, can you see the chariot coming over the hill? Now dance and say amen while waving your hands."

Courage Dreams: Power and Authority

I dreamed a couple of nights ago that someone laid out a grid of circles, each of them was labeled with an area of my life, and a hand was leading me to touch them and speak them out loud.  The circles at first were gray, but as I touched and called them out, they turned into bright colors.

Then, a voice told me, “As you overcome in each one, you receive power and authority to operate in that sphere.”

I remember what some of the labels were, and others are fuzzy in my memory.  I awoke feeling quite encouraged!

This is called a Courage dream. It fortifies, motivates, uplifts.  A dream like this creates a grateful heart and makes a person want to get up and get on task in the morning.

Everyone has multiple challenges in life, some issues that take years to resolve, physical disabilities that never improve, rejection wounds that keep reopening, abuse that leaves deep scars, tragic pains that cause great grief.

I believe the message of this dream is true.  When a person discovers, learns, changes, and works through life’s trials successfully, he is more able to recognize the symptoms in others and to help, with empathetic expertise.  We need each other.  Maybe if it takes me ten years to learn something, I can help a friend 'get it' in much less time.

How tender and sweet it is for the Creator, who knows us intimately, to fashion dreams specially designed for us that bring such wonderful inspiration to our spirits during the night!

Home Sweet Home and Mudrooms in Dream Interpretation

If your house is prominent in a dream, an important life issue is possibly being highlighted for you to examine.  Specific rooms in your house help to narrow down particular issues being addressed, according to function. (Read more about house dreams, specific rooms, and their possible meanings).

A new one snuck up on me today.  I have not encountered it in dreams before.  A mudroom!  Supposedly a room that everyone should have in their house, but I don’t actually know of anyone that does.

In one of my Better Home magazines I discovered featured mudrooms.  The author says, “When you’re an outdoorsy family, messes naturally creep inside.  A well-organized mudroom can be the saving grace of muddy shoes, drippy swimsuits, a mountain of jackets, hats, and sports gear.” The article describes how a family can make the room match their routine, so that members don’t have to slow down their progress of getting out the door.

Supposedly, the mudroom should function as a ‘buffer’ between inner home life and the world, a place to check messiness at the door, and gain quick access to equipment stuff before going in or out.

Of course, the photo showed a nice clean room with none of these things actually in sight except for neat rows of colorful shoes, but with lots of storage space, hooks, and organization hints.

Metaphorically, what would a mudroom represent in my life?  Somewhere to park life’s untidy chaos and not have to encounter it except in one neatly contained area?  How would that work?  Is that practical or even realistic? Who cleans the clutter and dirt in the mudroom?

I daydreamed a bit about a mudroom, which would seem handy, especially right now as we try to shift the yard dirt back into place after a recent sewer line upheaval.  A good amount of that dirt has gotten tracked through our house, along with the neighbors’ unsettled fleas that discovered the grass is greener in our yard and on our dogs.

This morning I voiced my mudroom ponderings to my husband, who winked and replied, “I thought every room was a mudroom.”  Yes, indeed.

For our home--and our life--truth is spoken.  A mudroom for us would be another room for me to clean.  Probably that is why we don't see many mudrooms actually in dreams--or in real houses.

Metaphors from the South

How much do you notice the degree of variety in life and language between varying people groups--north to south, rural to city, ages, occupations, even different spiritual groups?

When I moved to rural West Texas for college, this city girl from the Washington D.C. area encountered considerable culture shock.  I still find myself amused and confused at times.

In order to be an effective influencer wherever you live, it is essential to speak the language of your neighbors or 'audience'.  I have a full tank of notions to share on this subject.

For now, though, consider a few West Texas proverbs.  Think metaphorically about how Truth remains the same,  but word packaging varies.  How would you interpret or translate  these concepts to someone who doesn't live in a farming culture?

~Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

~A bumble bee is considerably faster than a tractor.

~Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled.

~Meanness just don't jes' happen overnight.

~Forgive your enemies.  It messes up their heads.

~Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.

~Every path has a few puddles.

~The best sermons are lived, not preached.

~Most people worry about stuff that ain't never gonna happen anyway.

~When you waller with pigs, expect to get dirty.

~Don't judge folks by their relatives.

~If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

~Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.

~Always drink upstream from the herd.

~Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in.

~If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

Pay attention to your own idioms and communication patterns.  How might you need to change your speech if you were to connect warmly with someone halfway around the world?

No More Dusty Ceiling Fans or Light Obstruction

After over a year of developing a tolerance for the fuzzy growth of dust on my ceiling fan light fixtures, the moment finally arrived—time to tackle the chore.  It took several hours to dismantle the lights, unscrew dozens of tiny screws, wash glass parts and light bulbs, and vacuum the fan blade edges that had accumulated alarming amounts of dust strata.

The amazing result:  brighter light in the room, less visible ‘sunbeams’ floating and settling, a feeling of satisfaction instead of procrastination and embarrassment. I ask myself, “What took me so long?  That job wasn’t so bad.”

I often wear a T-shirt that says, “I am a radiating center of Divine Love".  A wealthy concept.  God is the Source of light and love, which he infuses into his children.  Our primary job in life is to reflect or radiate.

All too often, though, we deaden our effectiveness by developing dull and lazy habits, neglecting attentiveness in keeping our spiritual lives fresh and CLEAN.  We enable the tiny daily grime particles of life to build up and weigh us down, darkening our flow of ‘light’ and movement of Spirit, allowing our issues to sometimes become eyesores and heartaches for people around us.

Most times, if we will take the first step to contend with an issue, others will come along and provide extra, needed elbow grease, and God also loves to equip and empower a willing heart.  The job can even be enjoyable sometimes.

These days, there is dire need for the Divine fireblaze within each of us to en-'lighten 'and dazzle a dark and negative world.  A little cleanup effort goes a long way in launching us further into brilliant, change-agent destiny.

What areas of your life could use a little polishing?

Is it All about Me—in Dream Interpretation?

When we try to interpret a dream, it is crucial that we identify the correct subject—who or what the dream is really about.  We may have some idea regarding meaning of symbols, but if we miss the central focus, we will not arrive at the best interpretation.

Most interpretive approaches center on the dreamer as the only potential subject.  (Read more on  dream interpretation methods). However, often God likes to speak to us about considerable concerns, and he may want to reveal something that is not dreamer-oriented.

He spoke to dream interpreters Joseph and Daniel in ancient scriptures regarding important national and historical issues like falling kingdoms and famine strategies.

Establish whether a dream is:

Intrinsic (about the dreamer, internal or heart issues, longings, emotions, opinions, circumstances) or

Extrinsic (outside of the dreamer, cities, businesses, churches, nations, other people)

o     If you are the main character in your dream, doing most of the action—your dream is probably about you (intrinsic)

o     If you are with others and are participating but are not the main character, your dream may be about a group you are a part of that affects you

o     If you are only watching the action in the dream--no one knows you are ‘there’—the dream is probably not about you at all (extrinsic)

Most dreams are indeed about the dreamer, but we cannot always assume.

If you are in leadership of any kind (business owner, board member, pastor, etc.), you will probably experience more extrinsic dreams that give you information regarding situations related to your sphere of authority.

Always consider setting and primary details of the dream, and remember to ask Spirit to tell you who or what the dream is about.  Often we think the message is about someone else, when our own core is being probed.

May we each grow in our understanding and ability to responsibly receive creative revelation from the heart of our Maker!
